The industry is taking ownership away.

In July 2026, Sony said it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028 — after that, new releases are digital-only.[1] It's not a shock: digital was already about 85% of PlayStation game sales, and physical just ~3% of its revenue.[2] Here's the part nobody advertises — a digital game isn't a thing you own. A 2025 California law now bars publishers from even calling it a “sale,” because what you're actually buying is a revocable license, not the game.[3]

Meanwhile, try finding a game in your phone's app store that starts without a live connection, or that's free without drowning in ads. The tiny, instant, play-it-on-a-plane game got squeezed out.
